Strut for new suspension with a diameter of 50mm or 55mm

Strut ø50mm or ø55mm?

When replacing the suspension on the VAG models' generation 5 platform, Audi A3 8P, Seat Altea 5P, Seat Leon 1P, Seat Toledo 5P, Skoda Octavia 1Z, VW Golf 5, Jetta 3, etc., the cars come with different measurements for the strut.

These measurements are somewhat like the axle load; the strut diameter depends on the car model's weight and equipment level, so you cannot know it from the license plate, engine size, or other factors.

The strut diameter must be measured – this is quite easy to do with a caliper – if you don't have a caliper, you can use a clamp or similar that can be locked and then read the measurement with a ruler.

Can I measure the strut diameter with the wheel mounted? – Absolutely!
1. Turn the steering wheel fully to one side
2. You now have access to the strut inside the wheel well at the front of the car.
3. Measure the diameter with a caliper or similar.

It is either 50 (49.8) mm or 55 (54.8) mm in diameter – see this illustration to show where to measure. You can easily measure the strut on the car without removing the wheel, just turn the wheel fully to one side so you can measure the thickness of the strut.
