The Difference Between Multilink and Solid Rear Axle – VAG MQB Platform (Solid Axle vs Multilink)
On the latest generation of the VAG Group's Golf platform (MQB), models come equipped with either a solid rear axle or a multilink rear axle. Solid rear axles are typically found on smaller models, whereas multilink systems are fitted to larger and more powerful variants.
It is important to identify which type of rear axle your car has, as there are differences in the suspension setup when installing lowering springs, coilovers, air suspension, or similar products.
It's relatively easy to spot the difference – below you will find illustrations of both types. You can quickly identify the rear axle by looking under the rear of the car.
Terminology overview:
- Solid rear axle: Solid Rear Axle / Twist-beam (EN) – Starre Hinterachse / Verbundlenkerachse (DE)
- Multilink rear axle: Multilink Rear Axle (EN) – Mehrlenker-Hinterachse (DE)
